Delivered at our  Training Centre in Norwich, Norfolk, this specialist Forestry First Aid (+F) course is designed to provide learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to manage emergency first aid situations in forestry, agricultural, and remote working environments.

This qualification is ideal for those working in forestry, arboriculture, farming, land management, and other high-risk outdoor industries where access to emergency services may be limited.

The FAA Level 3 Award in Forestry First Aid (+F) is designed to complement an existing First Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification, ensuring learners meet the requirements of the Forestry Commission First Aid at Work Policy.

Forestry First Aid (+F) Course Content

The Forestry First Aid (+F) training programme includes both theoretical instruction and hands-on practical assessment:

  • Catastrophic / Life Threatening Bleeding Control

  • Effects of extreme cold

  • Emergency planning and remote medical assistance

  • Crush injuries

  • Lyme disease

  • Suspension trauma

  • Lightening strike and high-voltage injuries

  • Snake bites

  • Multiple-choice knowledge test

  • Course debrief and feedback session

Forestry First Aid (+F) Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will have the knowledge and practical skills required to confidently manage a range of emergency first aid situations in forestry, agricultural, and remote environments.

Emergency Planning & Remote First Aid

Learners will understand how to effectively prepare for and respond to a first aid emergency where medical assistance may be delayed, including:

  • Planning for emergencies in remote locations
  • Managing an unresponsive casualty when help is more than 30 minutes away

Catastrophic Bleeding Control

Learners will be able to recognise and manage life-threatening bleeding, including:

  • Applying direct pressure
  • Using haemostatic dressings and agents
  • Correct application of tourniquets
  • Managing a casualty suffering from hypovolaemic shock

Crush Injuries

Learners will gain the knowledge to identify and respond to crush injuries, including:

  • Recognising the signs and symptoms of a crush injury
  • Providing appropriate first aid for casualties crushed for:
    • Up to 15 minutes
    • Over 15 minutes

Cold Exposure & Hypothermia

Learners will understand how to manage casualties affected by extreme cold, including:

  • Recognising the signs of hypothermia
  • Providing effective first aid treatment in cold environments

Lyme Disease & Tick Bites

Learners will be able to identify and respond to risks associated with tick exposure, including:

  • Recognising suspected Lyme disease
  • Safe and effective tick removal techniques
  • Preventative measures to reduce the risk of tick bites

Forestry First Aid (+F) Training Methods

Training is delivered using a combination of:

  • Classroom-based instruction

  • Practical, hands-on training using teaching aid.

During practical exercises, the instructor will assess each delegate’s safety awareness, competence, and aptitude, followed by a written multiple-choice assessment with discussion.

Forestry First Aid (+F) Entry Requirements

  • The qualification is available to learners aged 14 or over but a learner cannot assume the responsibility of being a first aider in the workplace until they reach the age of 16.

  • Valid / in-date first aid certificate. e.g. EFAW and FAW.

  • Due to the practical nature of the first aid assessment there are physical demands. Learners must be able to get to the floor unaided and successfully demonstrate all required elements of the practical assessment on their own, with the casualty on the floor, as in a real-life situation.

  • Delegates must have a good understanding of spoken and written English.

We can accommodate delegates with additional needs, provided these are declared at the time of booking.

What to Bring for Forestry First Aid (+F) Training

Industry Recognition

The FAA Level 3 Award in Forestry First Aid (+F) is designed to accompany a suitable First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid at Work qualification to enable a learner to meet the requirements of the Forestry Commission First Aid at Work Policy.

Prerequisites

Delegates wishing to undertake the training must have a valid/in-date first aid certificate.
